Southampton 1-1 Sunderland: 10-man Saints strike at the death

Southampton looked to avoid a three-game losing streak when it took on Sunderland in Round 29 of Premier League action.

  • Fonte sent off
  • Van Dijk scores late, late on
  • Defoe had put Sunderland ahead

Southampton scored with the last attack of the game to peg back Sunderland and draw 1-1 at St Mary’s on Saturday.

After Saints lost skipper Jose Fonte to a straight-red card with 10 minutes to go, Jermain Defoe put Sunderland 1-0 up with five minutes left but Virgil van Dijk popped up in stoppage time to slam home an equalizer.

With the point Southampton is in eighth spot on 41 points, while Sunderland is 17th spot on 25 points but missed a great chance to climb further clear of the drop zone.

Saints looked the more likely to score in the first half as Graziano Pelle went close and then nodded the ball down to Dusan Tadic but Vito Mannone saved superbly to deny him.

They went close again in the opening 45 minutes as Oriol Romeu slid in at the near post but Mannone made a good stop down low.

Sunderland offered very little in attack in the first half but Wahbi Khazri almost caught out Fraser Forster as his free kick was pushed onto the post by Southampton’s goalkeeper.

After scoring a screamer against Crystal Palace in midweek, in-form Fabio Borini tried his luck once again from range and his vicious effort flew just over as Sunderland threatened.

10 minutes from time Fonte was shown a straight red card as Borini raced clear and was brought down by the Portuguese international who hauled down the Italian and grabbed the ball in the same motion. Saints had little complaints.

Five minutes from time Defoe pounced to seemingly drag the Black Cats further out of the relegation mire but with the final kick of the game Van Dijk sent in an unstoppable effort to make it 1-1.
