Is Costa Rica going to see a second-straight summer as plucky World Cup underdog darlings?

Probably not, but Spain let Costa Rica stick around in a 1-1 draw during the sides’ Women’s World Cup opener on Tuesday in Montreal, and the CONCACAF team pulled a point from its first ever WWC match.

The Spaniards out attempted Costa Rica by a 19-3 margin for the match.

Vicky Losada scored for Spain in the 13th minute, but 21-year-old Raquel Rodriguez Cedeno found an equalizer a minute later.

Losada, the former Barcelona and WNY Flash player now with Arsenal, used a tidy turn before ripping a left-footed shot home to make it 1-0.

But Rodriguez, the Penn State player, merely had to tap the ball home off a great dribble and feed.

Spain came close to finding a winner several times, as always-dangerous Vero Boquete was a presence. Early in the second half, her daring dribble found Sonia Bermudez, but an outside of the foot shot missed the far post.

Spain will meet Brazil on June 13 in Montreal, right before Costa Rica tangles with South Korea. Brazil topped South Korea 2-0 on Tuesday.
