Security has always been a major issue in Brazil, where robberies of cars, possessions and money all common daily targets for citizens there.
Two incidents occurred yesterday involving Confederations Cup players in Brazil.
Six Spanish players had their hotel rooms robbed, FIFA confirmed in a statement.
''We know that there was a police report and this was being dealt with by the relevant authorities. We have also been in touch with the team” said FIFA spokesman Pekka Odriozola.
According to the Associated Press, Gerard Pique was among the six players robbed. They realized money and possessions had been taken from their rooms just before leaving Recife after their 2-1 win over Uruguay.
In addition, Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar’s wife was robbed at gunpoint in Fortazela, according to Rob Harris of the Associated Press.
This hopefully will be a wakeup call that security needs to vastly improve before the World Cup next year. If the country can’t even protect the players and their families, how can they expect the fans to stay safe?
