After missing the first two days of Liverpool’s preseason training and reportedly refusing to go on the clubs tour of the Far East and Australia as he looks to push through a potential move to Manchester City, Raheem Sterling has now upset Steven Gerrard.

Sterling, 20, did return to training on the third day of preseason after “calling in sick” for the first two days but his former captain at Liverpool, Gerrard, has been speaking about the conduct of the talented winger and the LA Galaxy midfielder admits he is “disappointed” with Sterling’s antics.

Here’s more from the BBC’s interview with Gerrard ahead of his debut for LA against Club America on Saturday in an International Champions Cup game.

“I’m not happy with all that carry-on. He needs to go in and see the owners... You don’t have to throw in illness, or refuse to go on tour. There are millions of Liverpool fans waiting to see Raheem pull on a Liverpool shirt. It looks very disappointing from where I’m sitting. The fans have shown him great support, they want him to stay and I believe that he should too.”

But Gerrard admitted that “the only way I can see for him is out at the moment”.

He said: “It’s very difficult for me to sit here and support him and the team around him - what they’re trying to do with his career at a young age.

“It’ll be a terrible shame if he goes somewhere and doesn’t kick on as a player.”

Damning comments from the man who spent 17 seasons at Liverpool before heading to MLS this summer and has captained Sterling for club and country over the past two years. We will see if Sterling heeds the advice given to him by the former Liverpool skipper.

Speaking of the captaincy at Anfield, it was announced on Friday that former vice-captain Jordan Henderson has, you guessed it, been named as Gerrard’s successor to wear the armband.

In a day of double delight for Henderson he was also named on the cover of video game FIFA 16 in the UK, beating Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero and Thibaut Courtois to the honor after the public votes were counted.

Hmmm. I wonder how fans of Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea, not to mention Manchester United and Arsenal, feel about that?
