Sunday’s Transfer Rumor Roundup: Draxler to Wolfsburg, Wanyama to leave Saints
With Kevin de Bruyne’s massive deal to Manchester City confirmed, Wolfsburg has little time to use the money this transfer window. They’ve already grabbed defender Dante from Bayern Munich, and will now look for a direct replacement for De Bruyne.
They have reportedly tabbed Julian Draxler as just that, and are reportedly attempting to hijack Juventus’s summer-long attempts to lure the Schalke attacker away from the Bundesliga. Bild reported today that Draxler is set for a medical at Wolfsburg later today, and the move is very close.
Schalke chairman Horst Heldt has confirmed that the team is in discussions to sell Draxler, but did not indicate the interested parties. “The door is not yet closed, as we had extensive discussions on the transfer of Julian Draxler throughout Saturday,” Helst said. “We will have to address the issue further, but we will also take the necessary time in order to make the best decision for the club.” Draxler was once one of the best young prospects across Europe, but has become stuck in a rut at Schalke in recent seasons, largely due to injury struggles.
Southampton defeated Norwich 3-0 today at St. Mary’s for their first win of the season, but they were forced to do so without midfielder Victor Wanyama who was “not physically or mentally ready to play” according to manager Ronald Koeman. This is largely due to speculation about Wanyama’s departure, which Koeman addressed after the match.
The team heaviest linked with Wanyama has been Tottenham where former Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino is currently in charge. Reports have Southampton setting a $30 million price tag on the midfielder, although outwardly the club has insisted they are unwilling to sell. The club has clearly missed the presence of midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, who moved to Manchester United this summer, and the loss of Wanyama as well would put a serious hole in the middle of the field.
With Arsenal in need of a striker, they’ve been linked with Dynamo Kiev attacker Andriy Yarmolenko. Now, reports are coming through that the Gunners will be challenged by Borussia Dortmund, who have apparently made a bid for the 25-year-old. He’s had a furious start to the season, with three goals and two assists in the Ukranian club’s first five matches of the league season, plus a whopping three goals and three assists in a 6-0 win in the Ukranian cup.
