Thierry Henry, club confirm legendary attacker done with Red Bulls

If it was a secret, ‘twas very poorly kept; Thierry Henry will not be returning to the New York Red Bulls next season after 4 1/2 years with the Major League Soccer club.

Both the player and the team have confirmed the news, with “Titi” releasing a statement saying that this season was going to be his final year with the team regardless of what happened on the course of his journey.

New York was eliminated by New England this weekend in the Eastern Conference finals.

I am taking this opportunity to announce that unfortunately Saturday was my last game for the New York Red Bulls. The decision has always been that I would leave after the duration of my contract and although that was never going to change, I didn’t want it to distract from the progress of the team.

A special mention must go to the Redbull fans who have supported this team through the good, the bad and the ugly times in the sun, rain and snow. You guys have really meant a lot to me and thank you for all your wonderful support.

I will now take the next few weeks to reflect and decide on the next chapter of my career.

Is he done for good? Is it time for his managerial career? Or will he take to the field in France, England or elsewhere for one last European hurrah? Championship or not, his time in New York was a successful experiment for the league and player.

New York is going to look incredibly different next season without Henry (and what will come of Tim Cahill and Bradley Wright-Phillips?!?). With New York City FC having the jump on new big names, what will the Red Bulls do? And how will they compete with NYCFC and DP-looking teams like the Galaxy and Toronto FC.
