Premier League Top 5 Goals (Week 12): Navas, Negredo and Shelvey impress
Week 12 was another ridiculous display of great goals in the Premier League. Here are the five best.
5. Shane Long (first goal) - West Bromwich Albion
Shane Long is the most underrated striker in the Premier League.
One matchweek after launching himself over the Chelsea defense to head home Albion’s opener in the draw with Chelsea, the Republic of Ireland striker was at it again on Monday against Aston Villa, scoring to peaches in the first 11 minutes.
The first of the pair was a sensational display of athleticism and balance as Long broke free of the Villa defense, looked over his head for Chris Brunt’s 50 yard pass, settled it with one touch, slipped left and finished with aplomb.
Like I said, the most underrated striker in the Prem.
4. Ashley Westwood - Aston Villa
Ashley Westwood flies under the radar as far as center-midfielders go.
As the deepest laying player in the Villa midfield, Westwood rarely gets forward and doesn’t score goals. Until now. Westwood sniffed out Goran Popov’s poor clearance, settled it and struck it purely with a little dovetail, just enough to evade the outstretched arm of Boaz Myhill.
For me, it’s not better than Long’s goal but the Premier League editors aren’t exactly footie savants. Congrats to Westwood.
3. Jesus Navas (first goal) - Manchester City
Well, this was bananas. Sergio Aguero has an early shot off the kick-off and Jesus Navas makes a full sprint and defies the laws of physics by carving a swerving chip into the far corner.
Hugo Lloris had no idea how this happened. And neither do I.
2. Alvaro Negredo - Manchester City
Navas’ goal was better but Alvaro Negredo’s left-footed turn on this goal was fantastic.
Best turn and shot I’ve seen all season. A purely hit, cross-goal finish.
Incisive, like a switchblade across the throat.
1. Jonjo Shelvey - Swansea City
Yes, it was a game winner. Yes, he beat two men and stabbed home a unique shot.
But goal of the week? I don’t think so.
This one has nothing on Navas’, Negredo’s or Long’s for that matter. Still, great goal by Jonjo.
