The defending U.S. Open Cup champions are out. And they went down fighting... literally.
As you can see from this footage, Seattle’s captain Clint Dempsey ripped up the referee’s notebook as Seattle finished their 3-1 Open Cup defeat with seven-men against their Cascadia rivals Portland. Sanctions will likely follow for the Sounders as fans and players lost the plot in extra time after what they felt were several questionable calls from the officials.

So, it all kicked off in the lone all-MLS tie of the fourth round but elsewhere on Tuesday nine MLS clubs took care of business by beating lower-tier opposition. But for some it sure wasn’t easy.
The San Jose Earthquakes beat USL side Sacramento Republic 6-5 on PKs as Chris Wondolowski scored twice in the second half to take the game to extra time after Sacramento led 2-0. Another MLS side to win on PKs was Philadelphia as the Union drew 0-0 with Rochester Rhinos through 120 minutes but beat the USL outfit 3-1 on penalty kicks to reach round five.
Real Salt Lake scored twice in the final 30 mins via Joao Plata and Javier Morales to overturn a 1-0 deficit to Seattle Sounders 2, while Quincy Amarikwa’s deflected effort five minutes from the end of extra time saved Chicago’s blushes against newly formed USL side Louisville City FC.
Sporting Kansas City battled to a 1-0 win over Saint Louis FC thanks to Graham Zusi’s header in front of 19,298 fans at Sporting Park, while the New York Red Bulls, Colrado Rapids and FC Dallas eased to victories. The Red Bulls beat Atlanta 3-0 with goals from Lloyd Sam, Ronald Zubar and Sean Davis, Colorado beat the Colorado Springs Switchbacks 4-1 with Dillon Serna scoring twice and Dallas saw off Oklahoma Energy with David Texeira bagging a brace.
