Gregg Berhalter confirmed on Wednesday that 17-year-old Gio Reyna will receive his first call-up when the group reconvenes for a pair of friendlies, against the Netherlands and Wales, next month.

Reyna recently made his first-team debut for Borussia Dortmund, scored his first goal for the club — a stunning curler from outside the box in DFB Pokal action — and set up fellow teenage phenom Erling Haaland for a goal in the Champions League last week. To say that 2020 has already been a ground-breaking year for the son of USMNT legend Claudio Reyna would be a massive understatement.

Now, roughly 32 months prior to the 2022 World Cup, Reyna will have his first opportunity to join the Americans’ senior team and begin the long journey toward earning one of 23 roster spots for the tournament in career.

Reyna won’t turn 18 until Nov. 13, 2020, meaning he will be 20 years, 8 days old when the next World Cup kicks off.
