Manchester United manager has seen his big summer signing Memphis Depay struggle through the start of the Premier League season, and he doesn’t like it one bit.

Van Gaal, known for ostracizing players and fellow management throughout his tenures, famously pushed world-class winger Angel Di Maria out after the Argentinian, in the Dutchman’s mind, failed to adapt to his system. Now, Van Gaal is warning Depay against finding himself with the same fate.

“[Assistant manager] Ryan [Giggs] has already given advice to [Memphis] but the player is responsible for his own deeds,” Van Gaal said following Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Everton on Saturday.

“You have to give respect to your team philosophy. We have seen that some players cannot adapt to the team philosophy. You cannot know in advance before you buy them. You have to wait and see. That happened with Angel di Maria and [last season’s loan signing Radamel] Falcao.”

But the Manchester United boss doesn’t think Memphis is close to that territory just yet. “Do I still believe in him? Of course,” Van Gaal said. “The problem with young players is they are not consistent. That you have to learn. We have to give him time.”
