When Liverpool host Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday (Watch live at 8 a.m. ET, on NBCSN and online via Live Extra), it’ll be the first foray into the two clubs’ bitter rivalry for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

It’s Klopp, 48, who was hired back in October with an eye toward being Liverpool’s leader for the next decade, or more, to provide the proud and once-dominant club a better future than its recent past (no English first-division league titles since 1990). Early results have been mixed, though the German is yet to sign any first-team players of his own and put his stamp on the club.
On the other side of Sunday’s derby, you’ll find Louis van Gaal, who is, by all reports, a sitting-duck manager just waiting to be fired after his next poor result, of which there have been plenty. It’s certainly an unenviable position in which the Red Devils hierarchy finds itself. Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola and Ryan Giggs are the names most frequently cited as his replacement.

So, the question begs asking: which club has a brighter future to look forward to — Liverpool with Klopp, or Man United and Van Gaal’s (eventual) successor? In truth, they seem two clubs heading in different directions, but at this very moment residing in the exact same place.
