The United States last won the Women’s World Cup in 1999, when a dream team consisting of Mia Hamm, Michelle Akers and Brandi Chastain defeated China in penalty kicks in front of a sold-out Rose Bowl crowd.

Tonight in Ottawa, the U.S. will face China again, this time with a trip to the semifinals on the line. This is the seventh FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the United States has reached at least the semis in each of the previous six tournaments.

Jill Ellis’ side will be without two key contributors, as Megan Rapinoe and Lauren Holiday are both suspended through yellow card accumulation. That means even more pressure will be on Alex Morgan, who will need to be on top of her game to break down the Chinese defense with Abby Wambach starting on the bench.
