WATCH: Relive CONCACAF drama, as USA hand Mexico World Cup lifeline
The morning after the night before, and every U.S. citizen in Mexico should make themselves know to locals for at least a few free drinks in thanks to what happened last night.
Wow. Where do we start?
Well, heading into stoppage time in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying on Tuesday, Mexico were out of the World Cup picture entirely as Costa Rica beat them 2-1 and the U.S. were trailing 2-1 to Panama. But cue pandemonium and utter devastation for the Panamanians in injury time, as Graham Zusi and Aron Johannsson struck two daggers into the heart of the home side to seal a dramatic 3-2 win for the U.S. which in turn handed Mexico a shot at redemption.
El Tri will now face New Zealand in a home and away play off to make the 2014 World Cup, with the USA delivering a horrendous blow in the most gut-wrenching of circumstances to Panama. All the Central American nation had to do was hold onto their lead for another 90 seconds, but they imploded and the U.S. were the main protagonist in a dramatic script that many are calling ‘the greatest night in CONCACAF qualifying history.’
Watch it all unfold below, the last video depicts a Mexican announcer losing the plot as the U.S. staged their dramatic comeback. Epic.
