Werder Bremen manager Florian Kohfeldt has been signing the praises of American striker Josh Sargent and the youngster delivered on that promise on Saturrday.

The 20-year-old USMNT forward buried a late header as Bremen avoided an upset at the hands of fourth-tier Carl Reiss Jena in German Cup play.

Sargent bided his time at the back post and met a terrific cross from Ludwig Augustinsson to plant a 49th-minute opener in the back of the goal, his seventh career goal for the German side.

He won seven of his 11 duels and completed 85 percent of his passes while having two shots blocked by the hosts.

Bremen hosts Hertha Berlina at 9:30 am ET Saturday to kickoff its Bundesliga campaign.

Sargent scored four goals with six assists in all competitions last season, not bad considering those numbers came in around 1700 minutes. He also has five goals in 12 USMNT caps.

Kentucky-born Creighton product Lucas Stauffer came off the bench for the visitors in the 90th minute.
