With Ukrainian Premier League suspended, supporters for derby clubs took to the pitch

The political unrest in Ukraine has taken its toll on plenty of events in the sporting world, including the location for the US/Ukraine friendly if not the match altogether.

And while the leaders of the Ukrainian Premier League have decided to give the schedule a rest until things find a semblance of normalcy, the supporters play on.

The weekend derby between Dynamo Kiev and Shakhtar Donetsk was not played, so the supporters stepped up in a show of unity. They played to a 1-1 draw in Dynamo Kiev’s home stadium in front of supporters singing their club’s chants and real referees laying down the law. They honored the national anthem and did the derby justice.

From Deadspin:

As a sign of goodwill between the two clubs and among Ukrainians as a whole, both sides’ ultras suited up in their teams’ colors and faced off against one another. The match was played in Dynamo Kiev’s regular stadium, was refereed by professionals, and was even attended by some famous players. Hopefully the participant-spectator inversion allowed for some cathartic heckling on the part of the players in the stands.

There’s video on the Dynamo web site, and it’s a fun watch even for those of us who don’t speak the native tongue.
