Wei-Yin Chen had another rough night on Monday. He allowed four runs in the first two innings to the Toronto Blue Jays.Chen hasnt won in his last six starts. Hes had three losses and three no-decisions.When he improved his record to 12-7 on Aug. 19, he looked like a good bet to be the Orioles first 15-game winner since Erik Bedard in 2006.That wont happen. This guy's pitched very well for us for many months. Not days, not starts. But again, again and again, manager Buck Showalter said.Chen has thrown 186 innings, two short of the 188 he threw in Japan two years ago. Showalter has tried to give him extra rest since the left-hander was used to throwing on five days rest in Japan, not four. You've seen all the extra rest we've done with him. Looking today, he's one of the league leaders in starts, which tells you how hard it is to do. And that's why they're in such demand, guys that can do the things that he's capable of, Showalter said. The 27-year-old Chen wasnt happy with giving up five runs in five-plus innings.I can just tell you I didnt have very good stuff tonight. I really dont feel like I pitched well, Chen said through his interpreter. After the first batter in the first inning, I walked a guy, I started feeling like, Wow. This is not the day for me. I tried to fight, fight through it. It definitely was not my day, things went a different direction.
Chen has pitched seven innings in just one of his last nine starts.I feel like I am still good, I still feel like I can go deep, like seven innings. I dont think thats a problem for me, Chen said.
