NEW YORK – Adam Jones was in the Orioles lineup on Saturday. It’s big news when he’s not.
Jones was hurt when he hit the right center field wall trying for Alex Rodriguez’s long drive. Rodriguez ended up with a triple.
After the game, Jones said he was angry because he didn’t catch the ball, and it appeared that a fan may have interfered with him.
Manager Buck Showalter said that he wasn’t going to challenge the play because he didn’t think the Orioles would win the appeal.
“They ain’t going to check it. They ain’t going to get it right. It doesn’t matter. I just wish I had that ball. I had a good bead on it,” Jones said Friday night.
Jones didn’t want to come out of the game nor talk about his soreness. Showalter said that Jones’ rib cage was sore, but wouldn’t get more specific about it.
“He takes his commitment to this club very seriously,” Showalter said.
Showalter is amazed at Jones’ toughness.
“He fouled a ball off his shin last night,” Showalter said. “Have you ever done that? Somebody take a sledgehammer up there sometime and just hammer it off your shin and have 30,000, 40,000 people go ‘get in the box!”
Showalter said he did spy Jones walking to the batting cage to test his ribs after the play.
“He’s tough as nails,” Showalter said.
