The Orioles' fun run continues

Theyre not number one---yet. The Orioles moved to within one game of the first-place New York Yankees on Monday. When the season ends one month from tonight, the Orioles hope theyll be AL East champions.A few weeks ago, that was silly talk. On July 18, they were 10 games behind the Yankees, and as recently as Aug. 17, New York led Baltimore by seven games.Another day, another set of milestones by the Orioles. Theyre now 16 games over .500 for the first time since 1997. Theyve won 75 games for just the third time in the last 15 years, and will soon secure their first winning record since 97.The Orioles have lots of work to do, but the body of work since they fell 10 behind is impressive.Since July 17, theyre a sizzling 29-15, playing their best ball of the season. When the Orioles began the year 27-14, many thought they were playing over the heads. For a nearly two-month stretch, they werent very good at allwith a 19-30 mark.In the championship distance, theyve accelerated, and thats impressive. In their hot streak, theyve taken two series from the Yankees, and others from the Rays, Tigers and White Sox, contenders all.Theyve lost series to the Rays, Rangers and Athletics. They play one more series with Oakland and two more with Tampa Bay.But, its only three days until the biggest series in Baltimore since 1997 when the Yankees and Orioles play four games. Its just a shame thats the last time the teams will meet this season. Or will they meet again next month?
