The Orioles have made qualifying offers of $15.8 million to three of their six free agents, Wei-Yin Chen, Chris Davis and Matt Wieters.
The three have a week to accept the qualifying offer or reject it. All three, who are represented by Scott Boras, are expected to decline the offers.
The Orioles did not extend qualifying offers to reliever Darren O’Day or outfielder Steve Pearce. A sixth free agent, Gerardo Parra, is not eligible for a qualifying offer because he was traded during the season.
If Chen, Davis and Wieters decline the offer and sign elsewhere, the Orioles will receive a compensatory draft pick.
No player has accepted a qualifying offer in the first three years of the system.
It was a foregone conclusion that Chen and Davis would receive qualifying offers, but there was internal debate about whether to offer one to Wieters.
NOTES: Dylan Bundy allowed a run on two hits in an inning in his second outing in the Arizona Fall League. In his first appearance for Peoria, he pitched a scoreless inning.
-The Orioles have purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Chris Jones and added him to the 40-man roster. He was 8-8 with a 2.94 ERA at Norfolk
Chris Jones has compiled two good years at Triple-A since becoming a starter and really improved his control in 2015. By continuing to pitch well in the Dominican Republic this winter, he has earned his spot on the roster," Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette said.
-Adam Jones is one of three finalists for the “Marvin Miller Player of the Year” award. Jones and the two other finalists, Miami’s Dee Gordon and the Chicago White Sox’s David Robertson, are being recognized for their community service.
The award is presented by the Players Association and the winner will be announced on Monday night.
