For weeks, Buck Showalter has been talking about how well Mychal Givens has pitched for Bowie this year. Showalter is acutely knowledgeable about every player in the Orioles organization, but he’s enjoyed hearing about Givens from Baysox pitching coach Alan Mills.
Now, Givens is in the major leagues.
His stay with the Orioles is not likely to be very long, but four weeks ago, conventional wisdom was that Chaz Roe was just stopping by, and now he’s a bullpen mainstay.
The Orioles seemingly have a good problem. Too many good pitchers to carry only 12, and that problem will be compounded this week when Wei-Yin Chen, who threw three innings for Frederick on Saturday night and Miguel Gonzalez, on the disabled list with a strained right groin are due to return.
Gonzalez allowed two runs for Bowie on Saturday night in his rehab start.
For the moment, the Orioles are carrying only 11 pitchers, but that’s because they needed to make room for Chris Parmelee, and after Monday’s off day, they play nine straight games and will probably need a 12th.
Now that Givens is on the 40-man, he can be freely optioned.
When the Orioles needed an extra reliever after Mike Wright got only four outs on Friday night and Tyler Wilson had to pitch 5 1/3 innings, they had some good choices.
They could have recalled Cesar Cabral or Oliver Drake, both of whom had pitched creditably in brief stints, but waited until after Kevin Gausman’s Saturday start to recall Drake on Sunday. Eddie Gamboa and Carlos Rondon are also on the 40-man roster as is Tim Berry, who’s at Bowie, but the Orioles thought that Givens had the best chance to help them.
And, they soon will have to make a decision on left-hander Wesley Wright, who’s been on the disabled list since the season’s first week, but who began a rehab assignment at Norfolk this week.
The Orioles won’t have five extra position players for long, not with this schedule, and they’ll also have to make room for Jonathan Schoop, who’s two days into a rehab assignment.
