O's keep hoping for Reynolds' revival

Don't expect Mark Reynolds to be benched anytime soon.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said hes sticking with the veteran first baseman, despite Reynolds' troubles at the plate. Reynolds is batting .177 in his past 17 games.

"He's got a lot of good baseball ahead of him, Showalter said, as reported by mlb.com. Only one way to find out: You got to run him out there and let him try to get a feel for it. His track record says at some point it will happen, but it really hasn't consistently yet."

"He's pressing quite a bit right now," hitting coach Jim Presley said. "Once you start struggling, you think it's mechanics, and all of a sudden your mind is racing so much to now you can't hit the 92-mile-an-hour fastball, and you foul it off instead. ... I'm just stressing to him to stay on top of the ball, that's how he was last year.

Ah, last year. Reynolds hit 37 homers and drove in 86 runs, despite his .221 batting average and 196 strikeouts. He has only eight home runs and 32 RBIs this year, though hes on pace with his strikeouts, at 102. On the other hand, as our Orioles connoisseur Rich Dubroff points out, Reynolds has improved his play at first base.

Showalter doesnt plan to sit him down in hopes that a day or two off will help, though.

"He, I don't think mentally handles that real well," Showalter said, according to mlb.com.
