You can always count on Buck Showalter for the unexpected. Tonight’s surprise is Jimmy Paredes starting in right field. It’s Paredes’ first start in the outfield with the Orioles, and his first in the outfield since he started 32 games for Houston in 2013.
Paredes worked in the outfield in spring training, and it’s a way to get both Paredes and Matt Wieters in the lineup concurrently.
Wieters is starting on four consecutive days for the first time since returning from Tommy John surgery, but he’s the designated hitter tonight, and on Saturday night played first base.
He has started behind the plate on consecutive days just once, on July 7-8 in Minnesota.
Showalter has spoken of having Paredes play the outfield in winter ball.
This will be his first start in the field since he played second base at Miami on May 24.
Tyler Wilson was officially recalled to start the game in Chris Tillman’s place.
