BALTIMORE --- Matt Wieters is in the lineup for Thursday’s game. Since he returned from Tommy John surgery on June 5, Wieters has caught alternate games, and refrained from catching on successive days.
Manager Buck Showalter said that Wieters would have to approach him to catch back-to-backs. Because of the Orioles’ schedule between now and the All-Star break, it looks unlikely that Wieters will catch on successive days before then.
“Matt may come up to me [in] a couple of days and say, ‘hey, let’s give this a shot before the break so we know what we’re dealing with,”” Showalter said.
“It could be. I don’t expect anything one way or the other. I’m happy to have him and Caleb [Joseph] every other day catching, so I don’t think it’s if, it’s when it will happen. It’s kind of Matt’s call. The question is: Can he catch a third day? I don’t have much doubt he’ll catch two.”
NOTES: The Orioles optioned Tyler Wilson to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for Thursday’s starter, Kevin Gausman. Wilson was recalled for the fourth time this season on Wednesday, and did not appear in last night’s game. … Four players from the Tides were named to the Triple-A All-Star Game. Right-handed pitchers Michael Bowden and Oliver Drake, catcher Steve Clevenger and outfielder Dariel Alvarez were selected to represent the International League when it plays the Pacific Coast League in Omaha, Neb. on July 15. … T.J. McFarland will throw for Norfolk tonight because the Tides were short a starter due to Wilson’s recall. Showalter said that McFarland will then return to the bullpen.
