BOSTON – In his first four games of his rehab assignment at Bowie, Jonathan Schoop is 4-for-15 (.267) with a home run and three RBIs.
Schoop’s rehab from a strained right knee is being overseen at Bowie by Brady Anderson, the team’s vice president of baseball operations.
“Brady thinks that he feels better each day and each day is a little better. He felt like the best thing is to just keep running him out there. He’s getting better each day as evidenced by last night,” manager Buck Showalter said.
“He’s running good. Straight away he’s running as good as he ever has. He’s had some real challenging plays. I have some real faith in Brady down there…. He talked about, ‘Hey I might not play him every day,’ but Brady felt like it was in his best interest to play every day.”
Schoop can be on rehab for 15 more days. The Baysox are home through Friday.
“Jon’s got a lot of confidence in Brady and Brady’s very good with this. He knows what it takes to play here and he knows what Jon looks like when he’s right. He’ll still come up here and have to get his feet wet,” Showalter said. “We’re not going to get in a hurry with him. Obviously, Ryan [Flaherty] is playing pretty well, so we’re not going to push the envelope.”
After Bowie goes on the road, Schoop could go to Norfolk. The Tides start a homestand on Friday that runs through July 3. Or maybe Schoop could be back with the Orioles this weekend.
“Oh if we had a pressing need, it could be earlier than that, but it could be later than that, too. Hell, for that matter, you could option him out. I know Brady feels like every game he plays there, the better he’s going to be when he gets back here,” Showalter said.
