BALTIMORE –- None of the Orioles are likely to be voted to the American League All-Star team as starters. The starters will be announced on Sunday, the reserves on Monday.
Manager Buck Showalter is going to champion his players’ cause, but realistically, Adam Jones, Manny Machado and perhaps Zach Britton have the best chances.
Jones has been an All-Star four times, Machado once, and Britton has never been to the game.
The Orioles center fielder is seventh among outfielders in the fan vote, Machado is fourth in third base voting.
Showalter doesn’t think Jones would be better off to rest during the four day All-Star break.
“I would like him to go. He deserves to go. It’s as simple as that,” Showalter said. “He wouldn’t be playing in the All-Star Game, one day out of four if we thought that that would get in the way.”
Jones started in 2013 and 2014 and was a reserve in 2009 and 2012.
We’d like for him to go if he’s deserving, and I think he is. I can’t imagine an All-Star team without Adam on it,” Showalter said.
Besides Britton, Showalter also thinks Darren O’Day and Jimmy Paredes deserve consideration for the July 14 game in Cincinnati.
“I can make a case for a bunch of guys. We’re all biased. I get to see these guys play every day,” Showalter said.
