NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino has made a stronger admission that the illegal formation called against the Ravens on Monday night was an error. In the weekly officiating video distributed by the league, Blandino said official Robert Tolbert should have recognized that Ravens offensive lineman John Urschel was reporting as an eligible receiver.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh was angry about the call after the game.
Blandino made it clear on the video that Harbaugh was correct, and that the official made a mistake.
“Typically when an offensive lineman is coming into the game, he’s going to report as eligible,” Blandino said. “We have to be alert for the offensive lineman coming into the game.
“You can see him (Urschel) turn to the referee and report as eligible. Confluence of events here, where the referee is a correcting a number from a foul on the previous play. He’s looking up, he’s making that announcement, he doesn’t recognize (No. 64) Urschel. This is on us. We have to recognize this. We want the player to get some acknowledgment from the referee, but again, the player is doing what he’s supposed to do. We’ll make the adjustments and it won’t happen again.”
If it happens to the Ravens again, you can believe Blandino will be hearing from Harbaugh.
