You want to be concerned about something from the Ravens preseason opener? Its not how the first teams on offense and defense performed. There were important pieces missing on both sides of the ball and rookies playing in their first NFL action. So we can just chill about what transpired when the familiar names were out there.
Focus your worry on the Ravens suddenly depleted tight end corps. Ed Dickson suffered a shoulder sprain. The Ravens already were without the other half of the tight end tandem, Dennis Pitta, sidelined with a broken hand.
Now, both are supposed to be back by the regular-season opener. The Ravens certainly better hope so. The club needs both of them healthy. Any reputable NFL offense these days needs a reliable pass-catcher at tight end, preferably two. With 54 receptions by Dickson and 40 by Pitta and eight touchdowns between the two of them last season, the Ravens and Joe Flacco made good use of them.
If the offense is going to bear more of the load this season for a Ravens team that wont be quite as defense-reliant well see about that then a dual threat at tight end is vital.
