As we prepare to watch real NFL games contested with real NFL players with the use of unreal NFL officials, the replacement referees had another embarrassing moment Wednesday night.
Pro Football Talk recounted a moment near the end of the first half in the Redskins-Buccaneers preseason game, after the Bucs had called a timeout to stop the clock:
The referee trotted over to review the spot of the ball, via a replay challenge initiated by the booth. And then he eventually came back to the middle of the field and explained that the call on the field stands. And then everyone lined up for the next play. And then the whistle was blown.
And then the referee turned on his microphone and said he needs to take another look. And scattered laughs and moans emerged from the crowd.
PFTs Mike Florio makes the salient point that the substitute officials wont have the thick skin that the veteran refs have developed over years in the NFL. Therefore, the replacements will be more likely to act like someone whos going to get second-guessed by media, fans and the league itself.
These officials havent felt that kind of pressure before. The locked-out guys have lived with it for years.
