The news was first reported by ESPN.com and confirmed by multiple industry sources.

Pearce, who wasn't re-signed by the Orioles in the offseason after four season with them, is batting .309 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs.

"Steve Pearce is a proven versatile player who gives our club more punch and stronger defense whenever he is in the lineup and a stronger bench when he is not," Orioles Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Dan Duquette wrote in a text message.

The 33-year-old Pearce is expected to help in the outfield with Joey Rickard on the disabled list. He signed a one-year $4.75 million contract with Tampa Bay before the season.

Yankees’ Luis Severino to undergo Tommy John surgery, miss entire 2020 season

Yankees’ Luis Severino to undergo Tommy John surgery, miss entire 2020 season

The Yankees were dealt one of their biggest blows of the offseason Tuesday when general manager Brian Cashman announced that starter Luis Severino has a partially torn UCL that will require Tommy John surgery, ending his 2020 season before it even started.

Severino, 26, figured to be the Yankees’ No. 2 starter in a rotation that looked like one of the best in baseball just last month. The loss of Severino now raises questions for a New York group that will be without James Paxton (back surgery) and Domingo German (domestic violence suspension) for the first two months.

The Dominican right-hander was hoping to return to full strength this spring after making just three starts last season with shoulder and back injuries. He posted back-to-back top-10 AL Cy Young finishes in 2017 and 2018 with a 3.18 ERA and 450 strikeouts over that span.

New York will instead look to newly acquired ace Gerrit Cole to provide stability at the top of its rotation. Masahiro Tanaka and J.A. Happ are the only definitive candidates to fill out the staff behind him, with Jordan Montgomery, Jonathan Loaisiga, Deivi Garcia, Michael King and Luis Cessa among the candidates to compete for the remaining two spots.

The Orioles will face the Yankees to open the season March 26-29. While there’s little doubt Cole would’ve started Opening Day even if Severino was healthy, Baltimore would’ve still likely seen Severino in that series.

Chris Davis is opening up spring training with a bang

Chris Davis is opening up spring training with a bang

SARASOTA, Fla. — Chris Davis doesn't look fondly on his past few years in Baltimore.

He hasn’t hit better than .221 since the 2015 season, and his on-base percentage hasn’t eclipsed .300 in the last two seasons. His trademark power, too, has dissipated each season.

But after an offseason where he considered retirement, Davis added 25 pounds of muscle and has a clear mind. And through the first few games of spring training, he’s off to a good start.

Davis hit a home run Tuesday against the Rays, his first bolt of the spring, and was promptly taken out. In just five at-bats this spring, he’s reached safely all five times and has drawn three walks, hit a single and then his home run.

Davis’ home run totals have decreased every season from 2015, when he hit 47 long balls, to 2019, when he hit just 12 — his lowest total since 2011 when he hit just five.

At 33-years-old, Davis is looking to revitalize his career with three years left on a seven-year, $161 million contract.
