OWINGS MILLS – Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith (back) did not participate in the early portion of Wednesday’s practice that was open to the media. Smith was sidelined for Sunday’s 27-17 loss to the Cowboys, and the Ravens’ best cornerback was sorely missed, as Dez Bryant caught two touchdown passes.

Smith’s status is uncertain for Sunday’s home game against the Bengals, who will be missing their top wide receiver, A. J. Green (hamstring). Even without Green, Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton could find the Ravens’ defense far less imposing without Smith.

“Obviously he’s a really good player,” Dalton said of Smith during a conference call. “I’m sure they’re saying the same thing as us – next guy’s got to step up.”

Also not at practice Wednesday were guards Marshal Yanda and Alex Lewis, defensive tackle Brandon Williams, and running back Lorenzo Taliaferro.

In positive injury news, outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil (foot) and tight end Crockett Gillmore (thigh) were both at practice. Dumervil has missed five straight games, while Gillmore has missed three straight.

Tight end Nick Boyle was also at practice after serving a 10-game ban for violating the NFL’s performance enhancing drug policy for the second time. The Ravens will decide later in the week whether to activate Boyle for Sunday’s game.
