Alex Ovechkin reached yet another career milestone in Saturday's Stadium Series, sits just two goals shy of another and even with that one in his sights, he's already talking about what he intends to do after.
No, Ovechkin did not score goal No. 600 on Saturday. His lone goal of the night was career goal No. 598. What makes it significant is the fact that it was also his 40th goal of the season.
This marks the ninth time he has reached 40 goals in a season which puts him among some pretty elite company historically.
"I don't think you can be surprised by anything he does," T.J. Oshie said following the Stadium Series win.
"I think he's going to go do as probably the best goal scorer of our generation," Tom Wilson said. "If there's one thing he knows how to do, it's put it in the back of the net. I feel like it's a new milestone and it's a new accomplishment for him every day, every week. It's been a fun kind of four, five seasons for me to just get a front row seat and watch it all happen. I think the guys are pretty happy for him."
Soon the players will be asked about yet another milestone as it is only a matter of time before the Great 8 finds the back of the net two more times to reach 600.
As for Ovechkin, he won't be satisfied when he does get there. He already has his sights set on what comes next.
"Forty is nice, but 50 is better," he said. "So still have time to do that."
