There are now only two players in the history of the NHL with more goals than Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin's two goals Tuesday were career Nos. 765 and 766 moving him into a tie with Jaromir Jagr for third all-time.
Ovechkin's first goal came in the second period as he hit Chris Tanev in the corner to force a turnover. He then pounced on the loose puck in front of the net and fired the shot past goalie Dan Vladar. The milestone marker was an empty-net tally in the third period.
Ovechkin now has 36 goals for the season, pulling him into 4th place in the league.
Jagr amassed his 766 goals over the course of his 1,733-game NHL career, 83 of which he scored with the Capitals from 2001 to 2004. It took Ovechkin just 1,253 games to match him.
The next goal will move Ovechkin past Jagr with only Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky to catch. They are the only two players in league history to score 800 goals and Ovechkin sits 44 goals away from joining them. From there Howe sits only one goal away at 801. Gretzky, of course, holds the record at 894.
