The Capitals first introduced these red sweaters along with their white road jerseys in 2007, back when the NHL's official manufacturer was Reebok. Not long after, the "Rock the Red" era was born. Washington carried over the design 10 years later after the league switched to Adidas and has continued to wear it ever since.

Another addition from the Capitals' 2007 rebrand, the white road jersey has been a part of many iconic moments over the years including the night Washington hoisted the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history. Aside from the obvious color difference, one notable change between their home and away sweaters is the lack of an advertiser patch on the road sweaters.

Modeled after the Capitals' 2018 Stadium Series sweater, the "W" jerseys were first introduced in 2020-21 before being brought back as their official third alternate in 2022-23.

These and the Stadium Series edition are the only navy blue jerseys the Capitals have worn in their entire franchise history.

After the Capitals went with red for the first Reverse Retro edition, they made the switch to black for 2022-23 in a nod to the Capitol jerseys they wore from 1997-2004. With the screaming eagle on the chest and the Capitol logo on the sleeve, the Reverse Retro 2.0 sweaters have quickly become fan favorites in D.C.

The Capitals released their 2023 Stadium Series jerseys Jan. 23 ahead of their matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes at NC State's Carter-Finley Stadium on Feb. 18. Their second Stadium Series game in five years and fourth outdoor game since 2011, the Capitals went with a white sweater that includes a new version of the "Weagle" logo on the chest.
