WASHINGTON -- Evgeny Kuznetsov may not want to talk about goals anymore, but he sure is good at scoring them. After serving a three-game suspension, Kuznetsov made his season debut on Tuesday against the Dallas Stars and it took him just 4:49 to get his first goal of the season.
Jonas Siegenthaler moved deep into the offensive zone with the puck and tried to center it to Richard Panik in the high-slot. The puck was tipped off-target, but slipped through the five Stars who were all puck watching and caught on the right side of the ice. Kuznetsov came in behind them on the far side and unleashed a backhander that beat Ben Bishop for the game’s first goal.
After his fantastic 2018 postseason in which he scored 32 points in 24 games, last season was seen as a disappointing one for Kuznetsov when he totaled just 72 points. That would be a great season for most players and Kuznetsov is tired of hearing about it. If he keeps scoring every five minutes though, he won’t be getting much criticism over his stats anymore.
