Capitals place T.J. Oshie on IR, recall Brett Leason from Hershey

Capitals

The Capitals announced Friday morning that they've put winger T.J. Oshie (lower-body injury) on injured reserve and called up Brett Leason from their AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears.

Oshie was injured in the team's win Wednesday over the Red Wings, though he never left the game for a long stretch of time. He is considered week-to-week.

The team is now without Oshie and center Nicklas Backstrom, who has not played this year as he recovers from a hip injury. Backstrom is on long-term injured reserve.

This season, Oshie, 34, has played in all seven Capitals games and has four goals and two assists.

In his place, the team called up Leason, a 6-foot-5 winger he spent the last two seasons in Hershey. Last year, he scored nine goals and had 20 points in 33 games. He's scored one goal in five games this season. Leason, a second-round pick of the organization in 2019, has never played in an NHL game before.

The absence of Oshie will create some interesting lineup decisions for coach Peter Laviolette, who will now be without two top six forwards for a few weeks. It's unclear if Leason will draw into the lineup on Friday against the Coyotes.
