The Capitals’ 2019 postseason was brought to an end by the Carolina Hurricanes. They will not have to wait very long to see Carolina on the ice again.

The NHL preseason schedule was officially released on Monday, showing the Caps will play two games against Carolina in September. They will also meet the defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues and the Chicago Blackhawks twice. For each opponent, Washington will play them once at home and once on the road.

The Blues have become a traditional preseason opponent for the Caps. This year marks the fourth straight preseason in which Washington has played St. Louis twice. Those matchups have become heated in recent years.

St. Louis defenseman Robert Bortuzzo missed the final two preseason games and the season opener after getting suspended for an elbow to the head of Michal Kempny delivered in the 2018 preseason. Tom Wilson has been suspended four times in his career and three of those occasions were the result of incidents from preseason games against the Blues.

Carolina has also become a frequent opponent. The Caps have played the Hurricanes at least once every preseason since 2014. They had also played the Montreal Canadiens once every year during that same stretch, but Washington will avoid the Canadiens this year.
