Hockey players are notorious for growing out their burly beards for the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. But with the Capitals facing elimination in Game 4 of their first round series against the Islanders, desperate times called for desperate measures.

Jakub Vrana buzzed his head, Evgeny Kuznetsov took it a step further and shaved his head bald, while both T.J. Oshie and Alex Ovechkin both shaved their beards to sport some goatees ahead of the all-important elimination game.

It seemed to work its superstitious magic in the second period, as Kuznetsov and Ovechkin both scored in a matter of a few minutes to tie the game at two goals apiece.

With everything going New York's way so far this series, who knew the key to defying the odds and coming back from a 0-3 hole was the clippers.

Anything to avoid the dreaded sweep!
