Capitals prospects Hendrix Lapierre and Vincent Iorio were among the final cuts from Team Canada's roster for the World Junior Championship. The full roster was announced Sunday.
Among the players not selected, Lapierre's cut was the most notable as a first-round NHL draft pick who played in NHL games this season and recorded a goal.
According to Corey Pronman of The Athletic, a lack of role and a poor selection camp led to his cut.
"[Lapierre] didn't have a strong selection camp or summer camp for the U20 team," Pronman wrote. "He's a very skilled and intelligent playmaker but lacks speed and size to give him a lower role on the team with most of the scoring roles accounted for."
Lapierre played in six games for Washington before being sent back to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He has two goals and 12 assists in nine games with Acadie-Bathurst.
Iorio, a second-round pick by the Caps in 2021, has played in 22 games this season for the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League. He has two goals and 13 assists.
The World Junior Championship begins on Dec. 26.
