In a game between the top two teams in the Metropolitan Division, it was a rookie who took control in the first period. No, it was not Nico Hischier, the first overall draft pick from the 2017 draft, but Christian Djoos who almost singlehandedly gave the Caps a 2-0 lead.

Less than three minutes into the game, Djoos decided to show off his sweet stickhandling moves. He broke the ankles of Devils forward Miles Wood to give himself space to go behind the net and set up Tom Wilson right on the tape for the early goal.

Nine minutes later, Djoos was the recipient of a nice feed from Nicklas Backstrom. Djoos entered the zone, dropped a pass back to Alex Ovechkin who fed it over to Nicklas Backstrom. Backstrom looked like he had an opportunity to shoot, but instead finished off the tic-tac-toe play with a feed back to Djoos for the layup.

Djoos was the key player on both of the Caps' goals and they needed them to take a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes as John Moore scored late in the period to get the Devils on the board.
