Former Capitals defenseman John Erskine was “severely injured” in a highway accident on Wednesday, according to a report by TSN.
The report states a pickup truck was driving in the wrong direction on Highway 401 in Ontario and collided with a transport truck early Wednesday morning. The driver of the transport truck was not injured. The driver of the pickup truck was arrested and taken to the hospital. No charges are expected to be filed.
It is not immediately clear who was the driver of the pickup truck.
Erskine spent eight seasons with the Caps from 2006 through 2014 and played 350 of his 491 career NHL games with Washington. He scored 49 points, but was largely remembered for his physical play and willingness to drop the gloves as he did with Mike Rupp in the Winter Classic.
