Don't look now, but the Capitals are heating up.
After going the entire month of February without a regulation win on its home ice, Washington has won three straight including victories over the division-leading Carolina Hurricanes and Calgary Flames. An improved power play coupled with the return of goalie Vitek Vanecek from injury has given the Capitals life in the race for playoff seeding.
History will be on the line Wednesday in Edmonton, where Alex Ovechkin will be looking to move past Jaromir Jagr for sole possession of third place on the all-time scoring list while Nicklas Backstrom sits two points shy of 1,000 for his career.
The Oilers, meanwhile, are three points behind the Dallas Stars for the second Wild Card spot in the West. The Oilers have lost three in a row and six of their last eight games dating back to Feb. 20.

It was Mantha who tied the game after a strong night for the second-line winger and Dowd who put the team ahead after momentum was seized."Â Read more.
Also from NBC Sports Washington's Bijan Todd:
"For the last half of the Calgary game, Washington looked like the deepest, grittiest, most motivated, best-coached team in hockey.
