The return of Evgeny Kuznetsov from suspension was going to force some tough roster decisions and the Capitals made them on Sunday.

Martin Fehervary has been reassigned to Hershey and Travis Boyd has been placed on waivers. Jonas Siegenthaler has also been reassigned, but this almost certainly is just a paper move to bank cap space and he is expected to be recalled on Monday.

Kuznetsov was suspended the first three games of the season. Now both he and his cap hit return forcing these moves. Fehervary is waiver exempt so his reassignment to Hershey is no surprise despite his strong play.

The real news is Boyd who has been beaten out by Chandler Stephenson.

Stephenson played well in the preseason earning him time at third-line center to start the season. His continued performance put the team in a tough position. He has a higher cap hit than Boyd so keeping him over Boyd was not so simple given how tight the team is against the cap. Evidently the Caps found a way to free up enough cap space to keep Stephenson who had certainly earned his spot on the Caps roster.

No doubt banking an extra day of cap space from Siegenthaler was part of that equation.
