The Capitals were handed a stunning loss on Thursday by the Montreal Canadiens. Up by one with less than 3:30 remaining, Washington gave up the game-tying goal and then two more goals very that turned a sure win into a two-goal 6-4 loss.
The Canadiens’ quick goals weren’t just shocking, they were record-breaking.
Max Domi gave Montreal the 5-4 lead at 19:38. Now trailing by one with only 22 seconds remaining, Todd Reirden elected to pull Braden Holtby for the extra attacker before the faceoff. If you do that, however, you really need to win that faceoff. The Caps did not.
Phillip Danault won the faceoff and Joel Armia fired the quick shot into the empty net. That gave Montreal two goals in a period of just two seconds, setting a new NHL record.

The finish to Thursday’s game was shocking enough. The fact that they were the two fastest goals scored in NHL history just adds insult to injury.
