When the Capitals have needed someone to step up in the past month of the season, it has been Alex Ovechkin to the rescue.
This week the NHL announced Ovechkin as their “Third Star” of the Week for the second time this season.
During this past week, the left-winger led the NHL in goals (5), including a hat trick against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The hat trick was the 20th of his career, but this time he had some extra motivation with a special fan in attendance.
Playing in four contests this week, the 32-year-old was bottled up against the Calgary Flames on Nov. 20 resulting in their only loss this week.

After their lone loss the Capitals won three straight games, paced by Ovechkin who scored a goal in each of those contests.
With a strong showing this week, Ovechkin moved in 21st on the NHL’s all-time goal list, passing Mike Bossy. On Saturday, the Hall of Famer also sent a congratulatory message to ‘The Great 8' for passing his mark.
Ovechkin currently leads the NHL in goals with 18 in 25 games. This is his 15th weekly ‘Three-Star Award’ of his career, according to Hockey Reference. In 2016-17 Ovechkin did not receive a single ‘Three-Star’ recognition by the NHL but already has two this year.
