The Capitals will be battling to keep their season alive in Game 4 against the New York Islanders on Tuesday and they will be doing it without Nicklas Backstrom. Backstrom was not on the ice for warmups and was officially declared out prior to the game.

Backstrom was knocked out of Game 1 when he suffered a concussion on a late hit from Islanders captain Anders Lee. He was placed in the league’s concussion protocol and did not play in Games 2 and 3.The news is a blow to a team already in a 3-0 series hole. Needing a win just to extend the season, Washington will not have to find a way to beat New York without one of its most important players.

With Backstrom out, Lars Eller remains in on the second line.
