Nothing's official yet, but if there was a time to get excited about a Henrik Lundqvist-Capitals jersey edit, it's right now.
Reports surfaced early Tuesday morning that the Capitals are the "clear frontrunner" to land Lundqvist in free agency. Washington is known to be in the market for a reliable backup to Ilya Samsonov following the expected departure of Braden Holtby, and Lundqvist is at the stage in his career where the chances of him getting a starting role somewhere were slim.
It all looks like the perfect marriage, though the final test could be this: How does Lundqvist look in a Capitals uniform?
Based on a quick swap NHL Network did a few days ago (0:21 mark), it's safe to say he passes that test.
We won't know for certain until Friday at the earliest when free agency officially opens at 12 p.m. ET.
With the hiring of Peter Laviolette as Todd Reirden's replacement at head coach, the Caps appear focused on maximizing what's left of their window with Alex Ovechkin and the rest of the team's talented veteran core.
Signing Lundqvist would be consistent with that line of thinking, so at the very least, Caps fans can get excited that their team is very much still in win-now mode.
