Christian Djoos and the Capitals closed out 2017 in style on Saturday night.

Thanks to an impressive performance from Djoos and another big night from Tom Wilson, the Caps downed the Devils, 5-2, and, in the process, leapfrogged New Jersey for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division.

Tarik’s three stars of the game:

1-Christian Djoos, Capitals

The rookie defenseman set up the game’s first goal by walking around Devils’ winger Miles Wood at the point, circling the net and then teeing up the puck for Wilson in the slot early in the first period. Djoos then made it 2-0 a little while with his third tally of the season.

He’s now tied for third among first-year Dmen in goals, behind Tampa Bay’s Mikhail Sergachev (8) and Boston’s Charlie McAvoy (5). Djoos also drew the penalty that led to Washington’s third goal.

2-John Carlson, Capitals

Carlson had another huge game in a season that’s seen a bunch from him already. No. 74 finished with a goal and two assists, giving him 31 points on the season. Carlson is now one point behind Dallas’ John Klingberg (32) for points among blue liners. Alex Ovechkin, meantime, earned one of his three assists as he helped set up Carlson's power play goal in the second period.

3-Tom Wilson, Capitals

Wilson finished with a goal, giving him six on the season.

In all, he’s got 18 points in 36 games. Last year, he had 19 points (7 goals, 12 assists) in 82 games. So, yeah, he’s on pace for that breakout season everyone’s been waiting on.
