Before Caps' captain Alex Ovechkin dropped dropped the mitts prior to Monday's tilt with Hurricanes rookie Andrei Svechnikov, where the Capitals captain knocked out the Hurricanes rookie, it had been nine years since he'd been penalized for a fight.
Back in 2010, Ovechkin fought Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky in a Dec. 12 game against the Rangers. At the time, the Rangers were leading 4-0, and after Ovechkin delivered a hard hit to defenseman Dan Girardi, Dubinsky retaliated and the two decided to go. Dubinsky won the fight, ending up on top of Ovechkin after the two landed a couple of punches.
At the time, Ovechkin and the Capitals were in the midst of an eight-game losing streak, and Ovechkin's frustration was conveyed throughout the skid. Although he hoped the fight would ignite a spark, the Rangers scored three more goals following the fight and took a 7-0 victory.
Ovechkin also dropped the gloves with Kris Versteeg back in 2013 in a game against the Panthers, but the tussle was not enough to warrant a fighting penalty, as the referees broke it up before it could truly escalate.
In addition to his Game 3 fight, Ovechkin has now fought four times in his NHL career.
