Central Florida beats Alabama-Birmingham 49-24

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Quincy McDuffie ran for three touchdowns and Blake Bortles threw for two scores to lead Central Florida to a 49-24 win over Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday.

With the win, UCF (9-3, 7-1) clinched Conference USA's East Division title and will face Tulsa in the conference championship game next Saturday. McDuffie had scoring runs of 9, 8 and 43 yards in his final home game for Central Florida.

Bortles, who completed 17 of 23 for 225 yards, hit J.J. Worton with scoring passes of 18 and 4 yards. Lyle Dankenbring returned an interception 78 yards for a score as the Knights took advantage of numerous Blazer mistakes to jump out to a 35-10 halftime lead.

Jonathan Perry threw for 307 yards, two touchdown passes and a rushing score for UAB (3-9, 2-6).

UAB outgained UCF 322-237 in the first half, but three drives inside the Knights' 20-yard line ended with no points.

Former MVP Adrian Peterson signing with Redskins amid mounting RB injuries

The Redskins agreed to terms with free agent running back Adrian Peterson, per multiple reports and confirmed by NBC Sports Washington.

Washington added Peterson as their running back group took a number of hits this preseason. Rookie Derrius Guice was lost for the year in the preseason opener, while Byron Marshall, Martez Carter and Samaje Perine got hurt in the second preseason game against the Jets.

Peterson is a huge name. He’s likely headed for the Hall of Fame when his career ends, and he’s one of only a handful of rushers to gain more than 2,000 yards in a season.

His best seasons came with the Vikings, but Peterson hasn’t delivered top flight results since 2015.

If he’s healthy and ready to go, Peterson could be a tremendous steal for the Redskins. There is no way to know until he suits up in the preseason, which could happen as soon as this Friday night against Denver.

On the roster, Washington has Rob Kelley, Kapri Bibbs and Chris Thompson available at running back. At his best, Peterson is significantly better than that group.

Will the Redskins get Peterson at his best?

That’s the big question. And with two preseason games remaining, he will get the chance to prove it.

Maryland players will honor Jordan McNair throughout the 2018 season

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Members of the Maryland football team will wear a helmet sticker with No. 79 to honor former teammate Jordan McNair, who collapsed during a practice session in May and subsequently died.

In an announcement Monday morning, the school said no player will wear his number for the next three years -- the time during which he would have been eligible to play.

In addition, a moment of silence will be held during Texas and Temple games, and his locker will be encased in glass.

Speaking in Cole Field House on the university campus with his teammates lined up behind him, Maryland offensive lineman Ellis McKennie said, "Every play we make, every snap we take, will be in Jordan's honor."

He added, "Jordan was fearless. He was a dreamer. He would do anything for his teammates."

McKennie said one student athlete each year will receive a scholarship "in Jordan's honor."

Offensive lineman Johnny Jordan said, "He was a gentle giant, and we as a team will continue to carry on his legacy for this season and far beyond."

McNair was running laps on the practice field on May 29 when he was overcome by heat and exhaustion. After being treated at the team facility, he was taken to a hospital and died of heatstroke on June 13.

The school has apologized to the family and acknowledged that mistakes were made in his treatment during the May 29 workout.

Coach DJ Durkin was placed on administrative leave on Aug. 11. Strength and conditioning coach Rick Court has resigned, and two members of the football staff remain on administrative leave.

Offensive coordinator Matt Canada is serving as interim coach.
