As the MLS is Back Tournament creeps closer, D.C. United learned who they will be playing when the schedule is finalized in the coming days.
On Thursday, Major League Soccer held the draw for their return-to-play event, which placed United in Group C -- pegging them against Toronto FC, New England Revolution, and the Montreal Impact.
The event will be held at ESPN Wide World of Sports at Disney World Resort in Florida beginning on July 8, the league announced on Wednesday. The same site will host the NBA in their hopes of crowning a 2019-20 NBA Champion.
All 26 MLS teams will participate in the group stage of the tournament, which consists of six total groups with three for each conference. Both the Eastern and Western conferences will have one group of six teams and two groups of four teams.
From there, every team will play three games in the preliminary stage of the tournament. The two top finishers in each group, along with the four best third-place teams will advance to the knockout stage of the tournament. From there, one champion of the MLS is Back Tournament will be crowned.
United hasn't faced any of its Group C opponents in the 2020 regular season. However, they did play Montreal in back in January for a preseason test -- they lost 3-1 to the Impact.
